``STELLA JAYNE MITCHELL
AND THAT'S JUST THE PRICE I PAYwhen i don't even know her nameSHE'S SLIPPING AWAY stella felt most happy when she was snuggled up with her daughter on the couch. it didn't matter that she was forced to watch hannah montana or wizards of waverly place because all she could hear was peaches giggling at the characters on the screen. with her face buried into her daughter's long blonde hair she inhaled the scent of peaches' freshly washed hair and sighed contentedly. peaches eyes were glued to the television set and she did not notice her mother lean out and take in peaches cute little face, her bright eyes and buck teeth. stella really believed that there was no one more perfect on this earth than little peaches mitchell. stella had never loved someone as much as she did peaches.
stella faced a lot of prejudice being a young mother, she had given birth to stella aged just seventeen years old. just a child herself. but she always said that peaches was the best mistake she ever made. peaches was the best thing to happen to stella and gave her the strength she needed after the whole drama with peaches' father. peaches didn't know her father and stella hoped to keep it that way. he had taken off before peaches was born because he had gotten both stella and another girl pregnant at the same time and was too cowardly to face up to what he had done. stella didn't want peaches to know what a coward her father was, she just told peaches she didn't have a daddy. she didn't need one because they were fine on their own. stella had raised her by herself for five years now, she didn't need any help from anyone.
"right monster," stella said taking peaches under the arms and lifting her off her lap and onto her feet, "lunch time." taking her hand she led her into the kitchen of their small apartment. "i want pancakes!" peaches demanded, taking her seat at the table. laughing stella shook her head, "you had pancakes for breakfast, you can have a sandwich for lunch and some fruit." she watched peaches pout and cross her arms over her chest but ignored her and went about making her sandwiches. stella surprised many by being a good mom. everyone saw her tattoos, piercings and bleached hair and just assumed she was a neglectful mom. sterotypes like that made stella's blood boil because she knew she was a good mom. peaches, although a slight diva at times, was a good kid, she was smart and polite and most importantly healthy and happy. peaches and herself were extremely close and she had a better bond with her child than other mothers she knew.
the sandwiches were done and she placed them on the table in front of peaches, taking one for herself she stared at peaches and said sternly, "eat peaches, i'm not going to make you anything else." at first peaches remained adament and narrowed her eyes at her mother definantly, but it only took a similar look from stella to get her to rethink and tuck into a egg sandwich. "good girl," said stella with a smile and watched as peaches cleared the plate. "you want some fruit?" she asked getting up from the table, peaches nodded and she pasted her a banana."need help?" she asked as she saw peaches struggling to peel it but peaches was quick to tell her mom she could do it herself. stella shook her head, like mother like daughter she figured.

BEING BACK IN NEW YORK was definitely something to be excited about for travis. he hadn't been to new york since he was seventeen. that's five years if you didn't know how to count. he had always planned on returning, but he didn't know it was going to be until five years later. he had come back to surprise his parents and his brothers and sisters. he had actually really missed them the most about being in new york. it was really his younger sisters sixteenth birthday and he wanted to be there for it. so of course he showed up on her birthday and decided to show up randomly. the only one who knew he was coming was his brother who was closest to his age. he had to let someone know he was coming, other wise it would just totally ruin everything. and he wasn't going to tell his little sister or his parents. just because he knew that he couldn't trust them with anything and they would be so excited they would probably blab everything to the rest of the family. they were definitely in for a surprise though. when he left new york, he had looked .. well normal. he didn't have the piercings and he didn't have the long hair or the tattoo's. which is what some of his family hated. he had been afraid about it the whole plane trip there. it was hard for him to accept things and he knew his family was like that as well so he was afraid of rejection. but to his surprise, when he showed up there his older sister had a ton of tattoos just like him and with a few piercings as well. he instantly had felt relieved and had talked to her for a while before even seeing anyone else, just because she had been the first one he had run into while on his stay in new york. they had gotten caught up on many things and then it was time to face the rest of his family. and that all went well.
COMING TO SEE ONLY HIS
family was a lie. he also came because he had to see a few other people that he had bailed out on when he was seventeen. the whole reason he moved to california. he came to see two girls and his two children. or what he hoped was his children. you see, he never even knew if they kept the children, if they were aborted or put up for adoption or if one of them had a miscarriage. but hopefully he was just wishing that he had a chance to come and apologize to the two girls. stella and anastasia. stella most importantly. only because he had this feeling that he still loved her. you see, the two went out for years in high school and were going to grow up and get married. when they were seventeen, she had came up to him and told him that she was pregnant with his kid. he was excited, even if he was young, he was going to try and be the best dad ever. but that all ended when one day another girl had come up to him and told him that she was pregnant as well with his child. knowing that stella was going to break up with him, he ran. he doesn't handle break ups like that. especially with someone he had loved so much. and he didn't want to look like a total asshole and get beat on by everyone yelling at me for not being there for the kids when they were born all because his girlfriend had broken up with him. everyone would have believed the girls over him. it's just how things were in new york with his school. and he felt bad every time he saw a little kid in california. that's probably what inspired him most for his songs he wrote for the band he was currently in. and it also inspired him to be a man and come and make things right between him and the two women he had five years ago, gotten pregnant. TAKING A LAST DRAG OF his cigarette, travis walked down the road looking at the sheet of paper in his hands. he had to find stella. his ex girlfriend. he had asked a few friends around that had been a mutual friend of theirs back in high school. they had given him her address and told him that she had kept the child after all. that made travis some what happy. but he was really also very nervous about seeing them. he had woken up at eleven that day and had showered and ate before he took off to see them. he had to make things right, and if she wouldn't accept it, he had to at least try, or he'd feel like a total asshole and then never forgive himself. at least if he tried to get back in their lives, he wouldn't feel so bad. he knew that she probably wouldn't let him in right away. just because he had done that to her, and she even some what realized that she might not even recognize him. though he was almost certain that she would remember him if he told her who it was and he acted like he did when they were going out. he was the only girl that could control him. the only girl that made him feel the way he did and the only one who could get him to quit his ways with his player ways. he put out his cigarette before he got to the house, and started chewing on a piece of gum as he stopped in front of her house and just looked at it for a minute. his heart was beating so fast and he really wanted to just get it over with. so he strode up to the house and then took a deep breath before knocking on the door and waited for her to come out. hopefully this was the right address, and hopefully she would answer. but he had told himself not to raise his voice at her. he knew that if she got angry with him, he would raise his voice at her. and he didn't want to do that, just in case her kid was watching or could hear them. he didn't want the child to think he was a total asshole right? ``STELLA JAYNE MITCHELL
AND THAT'S JUST THE PRICE I PAYwhen i don't even know her nameSHE'S SLIPPING AWAY stella was not the same girl she was in high school. the change had been so dramatic that most of her old school friends that she had lost contact with barely recognised her when they bumped into her in the street. while she still had the trademark bleached blonde hair she was now covered in tattoo (a result of working in a tattoo parlour and being particulatly arty and implusive) and had treated herself to a boob job. the latter surprised most people, but the truth was stella had never been as body confident as she had made out she was and had hated her boobs from the moment they started growing. she'd been saving up for herself and after four years of treating peaches she treated herself.
nowadays stella was more confident, she was more assertive and knew what she wanted. she'd become more independant and tougher because she had too. stella had been lucky enough to have a comfortable upbringing, she never had to contemplate working or looking after herself. she was her parent's baby girl and they spoilt her rotten. it was until she fell pregnant that she changed. after weeks of crying herself to sleep stella had an epiphany, she'd been forced to go it alone and she had to make it work. stella hoped that one day she could give peaches a similar upbringing to the one she had, with a large house, siblings, a dog and not a care in the world. but right now they just had to work with what they had, which wasn't a lot. but it was enough.
leaning on the kitchen counter stella watched peaches eat her banana and herself wondering who she most looked like. everyone said peaches was the exact double of her mother when she was her age but stella couldn't help but notice some travis in her looks and mannerisms. it was funny how a child who had never met her father could make faces and gestures just like him. over the years stella had come to see them as peaches' quirks rather than what travis' used to be. she tried her hardest to forget him. it was difficult, this boy - man now - was her first love and the father of her child. but he was also a cheating, lying, cowardly bastard who had left her when she most needed him.
just then there was a knock on the door. surprised stella took her eyes from peaches and turned them to the front door of her apartment. as she headed towards the door she turned to peaches and said , "throw the skin in the bin please," and reached for the door handle. she was not prepared for what, or rather who, was stood on the other side.
she almost slammed the door shut when she saw a man of twenty two standing before her but in a few seconds she managed to compose herself. "travis?"
there was a moment silence and peaches, having thrown away her banana skin as her mom had told her, wandered over to where stella stood to see who was at the door. with her eyes still fixed on travis and trying to keep her voice as steady as possible stella said, "peaches baby, please go to your room." peaches tried to protest but when stella growled "now," through gritted teeth she knew she ought not to push it and ran off to play with her dolls.
"what are you doing here?"

RIGHT WHEN SHE OPENED the door, travis knew it was her. just in a different manner. she had changed that was for sure. but so did he. they both changed to the same style. she was still as beautiful as ever and he instantly felt this regret that he should have never ever let her go. and now he was mentally slapping himself. just seeing her made the memories flood back to him and wished he had never cheated on her or ran from her. what he should have done was tell the other girl that it wasn't his kid. he should have just told her it couldn't have been his because they never slept together. and then he would have put up a fight for stella and never get her mad. then he wouldn't have been standing there in front of her at her door wanting back in her and their child's life. travis coughed a little and that was when he had realized she had either gotten bigger boobs, or she had just gotten a boob job. either way, she looked good. but that wasn't what he was focusing on. he was focusing on her face and her monroe. she had never had that when they were dating. and she didn't have all the tattoos. he wondered where she worked now and if she had another boyfriend or someone that was taking care of his child. that was when he started to panic. would his kid be calling another guy 'daddy'? that worried travis. ever since he was little he wanted to be called daddy but then when he had the opportunity to, he ran like a little weak wimp. but that had it's ups and it's down. the ups were that he was now in a good rising band, and that he learned not to run from his problems anymore. but the bad news? he felt like a total asshole and missed out on five years of his child's life. what a great dad huh?
WHEN A LITTLE GIRL CAME running to the door, travis looked down at her. it was definitely stella's daughter. and he could tell that it was his. it was just a feeling that he got. that it was his child and that he should just scoop her up in his arms right then. but of course he wouldn't do that. he didn't want to piss stella off, and he didn't want to scare the little girl. so he just glanced around. he really needed a cigarette right then, but he held off. he would wait until he had left the house. he didn't want to screw things up already if stella hadn't liked smoking or something. "i came here because i wanted to apologize. i wanted to say i'm sorry for being such an asshole five years ago when i ran. i was scared. i didn't know what was going to happen. i had to come here. i had to tell you that." he kind of rushed it, but that was because he was afraid of what was going to happen after that. he just wanted to get it out before he became a chicken and backed out right then. he gulped and then glanced around everywhere but at stella. he didn't want to make any eye contact. not yet anyways. he didn't want her to see the hurt in his eyes or the sorrow. he was sorry, but he wanted her to believe him without having to see it in his eyes. never the less though, he looked up into her eyes and then shook his head. "your beautiful as ever stella. i missed you.. a lot." he said quietly. he didn't care at this point if she took him back. all he wanted was for her to believe him that he was sorry and to talk to him.
TRAVIS LOOKED BEHIND HER wondering where the little girl had gone. he looked back to stella. "so um.. is that.. her?" he hoped that he would at least get to know her name and how she was doing. he wasn't going to be a terrible father like his brother was. he wanted to be the best father ever, even if that could never happen now. even if he had this feeling that stella wasn't going to let him get to know his daughter, he still wished that he would at least let him know some information on her. he wanted to know about his children, he didn't want to go his whole life not even knowing his own daughters name. and all he wanted right at the moment was to hold her in his arms and forget that anything ever happened. he wanted to forget that they were seventeen and had a child together. he wanted to forget they graduated and he wanted to forget that he ran away when she needed him most. he just wanted to go back in time before that party where he cheated on her. he wanted to go back to the late nights on the phone and the sleepovers where they would just hold each other all night and forget about anything else. where he still played football and she was still his number one. though he really didn't have that many friends, and he would hate to admit this to anyone, but he would still call stella his number one. she was closer to him then he was to his own family. she knew his fears and his goals in life. she had known everything about him. and just thinking about it made travis want to just go and kill himself. he missed those times and now he knew that he could never go back in time. he had to deal with what he had done.

``STELLA JAYNE MITCHELL
AND THAT'S JUST THE PRICE I PAYwhen i don't even know her nameSHE'S SLIPPING AWAY stella had spent the last five years pretending travis never existed. everything from photographs to football shirts to silly little notes that had been given to her from travis had been destroyed in a fit of rage. all she had was on photograph hidden away in a box under the bed, she kept it for when peaches got older. at five years old peaches was content with just mommy but stella always figured that when she got older she would want to know why she didn't have a dad like the other kids did and who he was. if peaches ever asked stella would show her the photograph and tell her everything. tell her how he broke her heart and ran away, how that she may or may not have a brother or sister in the same city as herself and that she hoped she would never go looking for him. stella had hoped that day would never come, peaches didn't need a father she had her and if she wasn't enough she had two brilliant uncles and the extended family of all stella's friend. stella had always thought that the day peaches asked who her dad was would be the worst day of her life. she never expected travis to turn up on her doorstep. suddenly her heart dropped into her stomach and she felt sick.
here was the boy who she had tried to forget about, the one she had denied ever loving, the one who had broken her heart. except he wasn't a boy anymore, just as much as she wasn't a girl any more. and while she had spent years stopping herself thinking about what he might be doing or where he was she couldn't help but wonder know what had happened to travis in the past five years as she looked at him now. it was harder tp pretend not to care when he wasn't there, but now he was she felt like her heart had been ripped out of her chest. all those feelings she felt the day he broke up with her and left came flooding back and all she wanted to do was slam the door in his face a cry. she'd promised herself she wouldn't ever feel like this again but travis still had this affect on her five fucking years later.
he opened his mouth and started talking, he was apologising. saying sorry for running off and that he was scared. suddenly all those feelings of loss and hurt were replaced by anger. "scared?" she hissed, "you were scared? how do you think i felt? i was seventeen, pregnant and alone. i had face bringing up my baby alone. i couldn't run away like you did." travis spoke again, "your beautiful as ever stella. i missed you.. a lot." stella scoffed and put a hand on her hip, "don't give me that crap travis. if you missed me you would have come back. don't tell me it's taken you five years to realise that you miss me." stella wasn't going to tell him that she missed him too she'd never admitted that to anyone, not even herself. she had always told herself she was better off without him and she found herself hating him too much to even contemplate missing him. it was harder in the beginning, watching peaches' first smile, word and steps and knowing - wishing - that travis was there to see them too. "so um.. is that.. her?" travis said. "my daughter you mean? yes." maybe it was petty but she didn't even want travis to know peaches' name, she didn't believed he deserved to.
